Sedex (the Supplier Ethical Data Exchange) is one of the world's largest platforms for supply-chain ethical data. Member suppliers share standardised information about their labour practices, health and safety, environment and business ethics with buyer members through a common database — replacing the chaos of every retailer running its own questionnaire with one transparent record.
The SMETA Audit
The substance behind the profile is SMETA (Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit), one of the most widely used social-audit formats globally. An independent auditor physically inspects the site, examines records and interviews workers privately, covering labour standards (wages, hours, voluntary employment, no child labour), health and safety, environment and ethics. Findings — including non-conformances and corrective actions — are logged on the platform for linked buyers to review.
What It Means for a Rug Buyer
Practically, a Sedex-member supplier gives your compliance team third-party-verifiable answers instead of promises: due diligence documentation for retail partners, evidence for modern-slavery statements, and a shared framework for corrective action if issues arise. For buyers in the US, UK, EU and Australia, that documentation increasingly gates purchase decisions — many major retailers will not onboard unaudited factories at all.
The Honest Limits
Sedex membership is transparency infrastructure, not a halo. It shows a supplier accepts scrutiny and maintains audited standards — the meaningful signal is the audit trail over years, not the logo.
