Check the Legal Basics
Ask for the company's registration details, GST number and export code, then verify them on India's public portals. A real exporter provides these within a day and without hesitation. Cross-check the factory address against the documents — not just a head-office address.
Demand Third-Party Evidence
Anyone can write "ethical factory" on a website. Sedex membership, SMETA audit reports and Higg Index assessments are verifiable through the issuing platforms and mean an independent auditor has walked the floor. Ask for the documentation and check dates — an audit from six years ago is a museum piece.
Use Video Ruthlessly
Ask for a live video walk-through: looms working, finishing lines, warehouse, your samples on the table. Live video is hard to fake and a factory proud of its floor will offer it enthusiastically. Watch for the details — is the person showing you around clearly at home there? Can they answer construction questions on camera without phoning someone?
Test With a Sample and a Small Order
The final verification is behavioural: order samples, then a pilot. Does colour match the standard? Did documents arrive correct and on time? Were problems reported before you discovered them? A supplier's conduct on a small order is the most honest audit there is.
