Rug retail has seasons; handmade production has lead times; ocean freight has a timetable. A rug importer's year is the art of keeping all three aligned — and it reduces to a calendar you can pin to the wall. Here is the rhythm for a Northern Hemisphere importer.
The Demand Curve You Are Serving
Rug sales climb as homes turn inward: autumn through winter is the deep season, with a January-sales tail. Spring brings the refresh-and-renovate wave; summer is the quiet trough — and the outdoor-rug counter-season. Gifting peaks matter less than in other home categories; nesting weather matters more.
The Year, Quarter by Quarter
- Jan–Mar: analyse the season just ended; design and sample the autumn-winter range; place spring top-ups of proven winners. Trade fairs cluster here — walk them.
- Apr–Jun: confirm the big autumn-winter order by late spring — this is the decision the whole year hangs on. Outdoor stock should already be selling.
- Jul–Sep: autumn stock ships and lands; photography, listings and campaigns built while it is at sea. Place any winter top-up order early in the quarter — it is the last train.
- Oct–Dec: sell. Watch the data weekly; what sells out by November shapes next year's core range. Resist reactive air-freight panics except for true bestsellers.
The Two Dates People Miss
Indian festival season (around Diwali) slows production and trucking for a stretch of autumn — order ahead of it; and year-end vessel space tightens as every category ships for Christmas. Both reward the importer who ordered in May. Our production planning works backwards from your selling season, not forwards from our convenience. Plan next season's calendar with us.
