A rug import business plan does not need forty pages. It needs honest answers to six questions — the same six an experienced supplier or lender would ask you. Write a page on each and you will know more about your business than most first-time importers.
The Six Questions
- Who buys, and where? Define the customer and channel: e-commerce, local retail, designers, wholesale to other shops. Everything downstream follows from this.
- What exactly do you stock? Constructions, sizes, palette, price points. A tight starter range of 8–15 designs in 2–3 sizes each outsells a scattered one.
- What does a rug cost you landed? FOB price + freight + insurance + duty + clearance + delivery. Build the spreadsheet before you order, not after.
- What do you sell it for? Handmade rugs sustain healthy retail multiples, but state your assumed margin and check it against visible market prices.
- What is the cash cycle? Deposit at order, balance at shipment, sales revenue weeks later. Map the months your money is at sea.
- What can go wrong? Delayed vessel, slow first sales, a design that misses. Decide in advance what a bad quarter looks like and what you would change.
The Supplier Section
Name your sourcing strategy: which region of India, manufacturer or trader, audit status, sampling plan, MOQ strategy. A plan that says "Bhadohi manufacturer, Sedex-audited, pilot order then scale winners" reads like someone who has done the homework.
We are happy to be the numbers in your plan — real FOB prices, real lead times, packing dimensions for freight quotes. Request a costed starter-range proposal and build the plan on facts.
