Each verifies something different. Here is a plain-language guide to what the major names mean — and which questions each one answers.
Ethical and Social Frameworks
Sedex / SMETA: a data platform and audit format for labour standards, health and safety, environment and ethics at facility level. Answers: "are working conditions independently audited?" GoodWeave: a certification focused on eliminating child, forced and bonded labour in rug supply chains specifically, with unannounced inspections reaching down to subcontracted looms. Answers: "is the labour in this rug's chain verified clean?"
Environmental Measurement
Higg Index (FEM): an annual facility assessment measuring energy, water, waste, chemicals and emissions — scores rather than a stamp. Answers: "does this factory measure and manage its environmental footprint?"
Product-Level Standards
OEKO-TEX Standard 100: laboratory testing certifying that a finished textile is free from harmful levels of restricted substances. Answers: "is the product itself chemically safe?" GRS (Global Recycled Standard): chain-of-custody certification for recycled content — relevant to recycled-PET rugs. Answers: "is the recycled claim traceable?"

Match the framework to your risk: social compliance teams look to Sedex/SMETA or GoodWeave; environmental reporting draws on Higg; product safety and recycled claims rest on OEKO-TEX and GRS.
