OEM vs Private Label: The Distinction
The terms overlap, and in the rug trade they are often used interchangeably. Strictly, private label usually means the factory's designs sold under your brand, while OEM means your designs and specifications produced by the factory. In practice, most programmes are a blend: the buyer brings direction, the manufacturer brings technical development, and the finished product belongs to the buyer's brand.
What You Control in an OEM Programme
- Design and IP: your artwork, your exclusivity — protected by agreement.
- Specification: fibre, pile height, density, backing, edge finish, sizes and tolerances, all documented.
- Branding and packaging: labels, care tags, barcodes, cartons — applied at the factory so goods arrive retail-ready.
- Quality standard: an agreed inspection protocol, ideally with photographic reporting before dispatch.
What the Manufacturer Contributes
Technique. A design that looks simple on screen must be translated into knots, tufts or weave structure — decisions about yarn count, dye method and construction that determine how the rug feels and wears.
