Importing Rugs into Canada: The Overlooked North American Market

Elegant interior in the blended North American–European taste

Canada is often the overlooked North American market — a tenth the size of its neighbour but with less competition, strong design culture in its cities, and an import regime that is clear and navigable for a small business. Here is the Canada-specific layer.

Registration and Entry

You import under your business number with an import-export account — a quick registration. Commercial entries are filed through customs brokers as standard; GST/HST applies at import and is recoverable for registered businesses. As everywhere, engage the broker before the vessel sails.

Duty and Preferences

Rugs classify under Chapter 57 of the Canadian tariff. Canada has historically extended preferential tariff treatment to goods from developing countries including India under its preference programmes, with origin documentation determining the rate applied — and handmade constructions faring well. Verify the current status and rate for your code with your broker, as preference programmes are periodically revised.

Canada-Specific Compliance

  • Textile labelling: fibre content and dealer identity under the Textile Labelling Act — and note the bilingual requirement: labels in English and French.
  • Origin marking: country of origin must reach the consumer.
  • Flammability: rugs fall under Canada's consumer product flammability requirements — established exporters test and document accordingly.

The Market Itself

Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal anchor a design-literate market with tastes that blend US scale and European restraint — natural fibres and warm neutrals sell, and the long winter is a structural argument for soft flooring. Bilingual labels are applied at our factory to Canadian buyers' instruction. Ask for a Canada-ready quotation.
