How to Import Handmade Rugs from India: A Buyer's Guide

Stacks of traditional handmade carpets and rugs

India supplies roughly 40% of the world's handmade carpets, exporting over US$1.5 billion of rugs a year to the USA, Europe, the Middle East, Australia and, increasingly, Latin America. If you are a retailer, distributor or designer considering direct import, the process is more approachable than it looks. Here is how it works in practice.

Step 1: Choose the Right Kind of Supplier

The critical distinction is between manufacturers and trading houses. A manufacturer weaves what it sells and controls quality, lead times and pricing directly; a trader adds a margin and a layer of distance from the loom. Ask explicitly: do you own your production? Can we audit or visit the facility? Manufacturers in established hubs — Bhadohi above all — will answer both questions comfortably.

Step 2: Sample Before You Commit

Serious suppliers expect to produce samples: a small piece or full-size prototype in your specification, typically within two to four weeks. Judge the sample for pile density, colour accuracy against your standard, edge finishing and backing quality. A supplier reluctant to sample is telling you something.

Step 3: Understand the Commercial Terms

Most export orders are quoted FOB (free on board — you arrange shipping from the Indian port) or CIF (supplier delivers to your port). Payment is commonly a deposit against order with balance at shipment. Handmade rugs from India enter many markets at favourable duty rates — hand-knotted wool rugs, for instance, attract low or zero base tariffs in several countries — but confirm current rates for your HS code and market before ordering.

Step 4: Plan Realistic Lead Times

Handmade means weeks, not days: expect 6–12 weeks from confirmed order to dispatch depending on construction, quantity and finishing. Good suppliers share milestone updates — dyeing complete, weaving underway, finishing, QC, packed.
