How to Start a Rug Import Business from India: The Complete Roadmap

Stacked handmade rugs ready for export from India

Every rug importer started with a first order. The trade looks intimidating from outside — freight, customs, foreign suppliers — but a small business can begin importing handmade rugs from India with modest capital and a clear sequence of steps. Here is the sequence, from someone on the manufacturing side of thousands of such first orders.

Step 1: Decide What You Will Sell, and to Whom

Do not start with "rugs". Start with a customer: online shoppers who want natural-fibre texture, local interior designers who need custom sizes, a retail corner in an existing furniture business. The customer defines the construction (handloom and hand-tufted for accessible price points, hand-knotted for the top end), the sizes and the budget.

Step 2: Register the Basics

In most countries you need only a normal business registration, a tax number and — depending on the market — an importer identification (such as a customs registration or EORI-style number). No special licence is required to import handmade rugs in most major markets, though you should confirm current requirements with your customs authority or a local broker.

Step 3: Find a Manufacturer, Not a Middleman

India weaves roughly 40% of the world's handmade carpets, and the industry is concentrated in hubs like Bhadohi. Deal directly with a factory that owns its production: pricing is cleaner, quality questions get real answers, and small first orders are treated as the start of a relationship rather than a nuisance.

Step 4: Sample, Order Small, Learn the Chain

Request samples, place a pilot order — often a part-container shipped LCL — and use it to learn the full chain: payment, production milestones, shipping documents, customs clearance, landed cost. Your second order will feel routine.

Start With a Conversation

Deepak Carpets has exported from Bhadohi since 1979 and regularly helps first-time importers through their first shipment — samples, honest lead times, export paperwork handled. Tell us what you plan to sell and we will map out your first order together.
