A well-made handmade carpet, properly cared for, can last a lifetime — and even improve with age. But without the right maintenance habits, even the finest rug can deteriorate prematurely. Here is everything you need to know.
Regular Vacuuming
Vacuum your rug regularly — at least once a week in high-traffic areas. Use a suction-only attachment on hand-knotted and hand-tufted rugs to avoid pulling the pile. Always vacuum in the direction of the pile. Avoid vacuuming the fringe with a beater bar.
Rotating Your Rug
Rotate your rug 180 degrees every 6–12 months to ensure even wear and sun exposure. This is particularly important in rooms with directional natural light, which can cause uneven fading over time.
Dealing with Spills
Act quickly. Blot (do not rub) any liquid spill with a clean white cloth, working from the outer edge inward to prevent spreading. For solid spills, gently scrape away the bulk before blotting. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners — mild dish soap diluted in cold water is usually sufficient for most water-soluble stains.
Professional Cleaning
Have your handmade rug professionally cleaned every 2–3 years, or when visible soiling cannot be removed through routine spot cleaning. Choose a cleaner with experience in handmade textiles — not all commercial cleaning methods are appropriate for wool or viscose pile rugs.
Storage
If storing a rug for an extended period, roll it (do not fold) around an acid-free tube with the pile facing inward. Wrap in breathable cotton or muslin — never plastic, which traps moisture and encourages mould. Store in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight and pests.
Rug Pads
A good quality rug pad extends the life of any carpet by reducing friction and movement, preventing slipping, and providing cushioning that reduces wear on the pile. Always use a rug pad sized slightly smaller than the rug to keep it hidden.
Fibre-Specific Notes
- Wool: Resilient and naturally stain-resistant. May shed initially — this is normal. Do not over-wet when cleaning.
- Viscose/Silk blends: More delicate. Avoid moisture where possible. Professional clean only.
- Jute/Cotton: Sensitive to water — spot clean only. Keep away from damp environments.
- Outdoor/PET rugs: Can be hosed down and air-dried. Avoid prolonged submersion.
