Hand tufting is one of the most widely practised carpet-making techniques in Bhadohi — and one that demands an extraordinary level of skill, patience, and eye for pattern. Unlike machine-made rugs, each hand-tufted piece is the product of direct human engagement with material, design, and process.
What is Hand Tufting?
Hand tufting involves using a handheld tufting gun to push loops or cuts of yarn through a stretched primary backing fabric. The craftsman follows a pre-drawn or transferred design on the backing, working row by row to build up the pile of the rug. Once complete, a secondary backing is adhered to lock the yarns in place, and the surface is sheared to an even pile height or left in loop form.
The Role of the Craftsman
While a tufting gun is a powered tool, the quality of the output depends entirely on the person wielding it. Our craftsmen develop their skill over years — understanding how to maintain consistent pile density, how to transition cleanly between colours, and how to read and interpret complex design patterns with accuracy.
At Deepak Carpets, many of our artisans carry generational knowledge from families that have worked in the carpet trade for decades. That depth of expertise is what separates a truly fine hand-tufted rug from a merely adequate one.
Materials Matter
We work with a range of fibres — wool, viscose, PET, and blends — and the choice of material significantly affects the finished feel and durability of the rug. Wool is prized for its resilience and natural lustre; viscose adds a silk-like sheen; PET offers a practical, sustainable alternative for high-traffic environments.
From Tufting to Dispatch
After tufting, each rug goes through our multi-stage finishing process: latexing, secondary backing, pile height shearing, washing, stretching, and final quality inspection. Nothing leaves our facility without passing through the hands of an experienced QC team.
The result is a rug that carries the mark of real human craftsmanship — not the uniformity of a machine, but the character, warmth, and subtle uniqueness that only hand-made work can deliver.
